Ainsworth: 'Switch to Renewable Energy and Help Stop Climate Change'

19 January 2006

Peter Ainsworth, MP for East Surrey and Shadow Environment Secretary, this week joined David Cameron and other members of the shadow cabinet in signing up for renewable energy.

Backing the Climate Change Now campaign, Peter Ainsworth said:

“It’s really important that people can make a difference on issues that matter to them. By switching to a renewable energy supplier, people across East Surrey can take responsibility for their own impact on the environment, and help to halt climate change.

“You can choose from a range of energy suppliers, and I have switched my electricity account at my Lingfield home to one sourced entirely from an off-shore wind farm.

“Along with David Cameron and I, many other Conservative colleagues have signed up today. It’s something you can do in your lunch break.”

Climate Change Now encourages households to switch to renewable electricity providers. By individuals acting collectively, people can help the fight against climate change.

Many residents across East Surrey may still be on old, expensive tariffs without ever looking at the possibility of switching to a more affordable provider for their electricity. Yet there are now a number of companies, endorsed by green groups, who provide eco-friendly energy and who, in many cases, are cheaper than the priciest non-renewable tariffs.

It is possible to switch easily online, via www.climatechangenow.com.

A third of UK carbon emissions come from homes. Switching renewable energy is therefore the single most effective action that local residents can take to tackle climate change.
