At a full meeting of Surrey County Council today, the Council has agreed proposals that will keep local schools within the catchment area for Oxted School.
Speaking on the announcement, Peter Ainsworth said:
“I am very pleased by the final decision. Of course the Council would have loved to have been able to admit everyone who wanted to attend Oxted School, but given the circumstances, they have managed to find the best possible solution.”
He went on to say,
“I would like to congratulate both the campaigners for all their hard work in making the Council aware of their concerns and the Council for reaching this agreement. This decision has shown that in Surrey, local democracy is alive and kicking.”

The new, alternative proposal for admissions to Oxted retains the large catchment area for 2008 which includes Oxted, Godstone, Lingfield & Dormansland but adds a qualification that the applicant should also be attending one of the traditional feeder schools. This does not mean that you cannot go to Oxted School if you do not attend a named partner school but it does give priority to this group.
The proposal also means that those living outside the catchment area would fall below those living in the area and at a named school. After this group, there would be a tiebreaker to determine how the remaining places are allocated. The standard Surrey tie-break criteria is straight-line distance although a variation called nearest alternative school is currently included in the Oxted Proposal.
The full proposal can be found online.
