East Surrey MP to sign petition to save Station Road East Post Office

31 January 2008

Local MP, Peter Ainsworth, is to sign a petition calling on Post Office Ltd to keep Station Road East Post Office open. The petition is being set up by local resident Marcus Brockes, with the signing taking place outside the Post Office on Saturday 2nd February at 11am.

Last week, Post Office Ltd announced that Station Road East Post Office has been earmarked for closure, subject to a six week public consultation, as part of the Government’s policy to close 2,500 post offices across the country.

Speaking on the proposed closure Mr Ainsworth said,

“I am delighted that Mr Brockes has decided to set up his petition. The closure of this post office would result in the most vulnerable in society having to travel further whilst at the same time have a detrimental effect on the trading environment for many local businesses which rely on the post office.”

He went on to say,

“I hope this petition together with the one I have set up on my website will show Post Office Ltd the strong feeling and need the community has for this Post Office”.

Ends.
