Surrey MPs united to fight for threatened Post Offices

17 December 2007

Surrey MPs held an emergency meeting in Westminster last week to discuss the grave prospects for local Post Offices following a series of ominous Government moves.

As millions of letters cards and parcels are sent from Surrey’s post offices for the Christmas season, the Government are planning to greet the New Year with a massive programme of post office closures.

Post Office Ltd are due to announce next month which Post Offices in Surrey are under threat of closure following Government plans to shut 2,500 sub-post offices across the Country.

Peter Ainsworth MP said: "We don't yet know where the axe will fall on local Post Offices, but we do know that it is being sharpened. The Government has promised to consult before taking any final decisions, and I hope that this will be a genuine exercise. In particular, it will be essential to take proper account of the impact of any closures on older people and the less mobile. Post Offices form a vital part of our social fabric."
