Peter Ainsworth has spoken in Parliament on the flooding incidents across England and has expressed his concern for the many thousands of people whose homes have been flooded and whose business premises have been wrecked.
Peter Ainsworth said:
“The level of flooding in Surrey has, thankfully, not been as severe as that seen in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and the North of England but residents have suffered disruption to journeys and damage to property as a result of heavy rainfall in recent days. My sympathy goes out to those that have suffered losses.”
He went on to say:
“It is vital that we are in the best position to cope with extreme weather conditions, which I fear will become more frequent. I have therefore today asked that the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs hold urgent discussions with Ministerial colleagues about the priority given to the mundane but essential work of properly maintaining drains and culverts. Ensuring proper ongoing maintenance work is undertaken will help keep flood water away from homes and businesses and minimise the damage to personal property.”
