Peter Ainsworth is this week launching a petition in support of NHS staff and the patients they serve who are now facing the effects of Labour’s cutbacks and closures. The petition calls on Gordon Brown to stop his NHS cuts.irst Para in Bold
With mounting concern at the £1,277,000,000 deficit run up by the NHS in the last year, NHS bosses around the country are now pouring over plans to close hospitals, cut jobs, and slash services. And the axe is now poised over services in the Surrey and Sussex Strategic Health Authority area, which itself ran up a deficit of £85 million in the last financial year.
Launching a petition in support of NHS staff, Peter Ainsworth MP revealed that Gordon Brown’s mismanagement of the NHS has resulted in:
• The worst deficit in the history of the NHS.
• Stringent cutbacks and closures in response to Gordon Brown’s order that the NHS should be in the black by April.
• A perverse system of NHS accounting which means that many NHS organisations are now crippled by a ‘double deficit’. Mr Ainsworth explained:
‘If people want to know why their NHS services are suffering, they should look no further than Gordon Brown. His financial mismanagement of the NHS means that the money from Labour’s earlier NHS spending spree has been squandered – and now staff and patients are paying the price.
‘Our petition highlights Gordon Brown’s responsibility for the NHS financial crisis. We want as many signatures as possible to show the huge support among members of the public for our NHS, its staff, and the patients they serve – and to Stop Brown’s NHS cuts!’
Peter Ainsworth has also reiterated his support for:
• An NHS which is independent of government, to stop the ministerial meddling and political interference which has blighted NHS policy-making.
• A fairer system of funding for the NHS, so that areas with a high burden of disease are given enough money to provide everyone with a high standard of care.
• Long-term decision making, to end Labour’s obsession with policies which grab newspaper headlines but do little to tackle the epidemics of obesity, alcohol abuse and sexually transmitted diseases.
