East Surrey MP, Peter Ainsworth, has today signed a parliamentary motion expressing concern over the Government’s approach to business rates, most notably on empty properties. Mr Ainsworth has signed Early Day Motion 2373 – tabled by Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP – which calls on the Government to free small businesses in these uncertain economic times, making it easier for them to operate and compete effectively. Commenting on the EDM, Mr Ainsworth said: “Local, independent businesses can often find things difficult at the best of times, and the current financial climate has certainly not made things any easier. These businesses are the engine of our economy, and it is they who will be hit hardest by this further Government stealth tax on empty properties. “In these tough times we need to free local businesses up not tie them down, make it easier for them to compete effectively and help them get back on their feet.” |
