In response to a recent letter from the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), East Surrey MP, Peter Ainsworth, has urged the VOA to make a quick decision regarding Lingfield’s eligibility for rate reduction. The appeal was made in order to counteract the loss of revenue following the prolonged, disruptive roadworks that have plagued Lingfield High Street for the last seven weeks. Mr Ainsworth said: “Whilst I am happy that the VOA is on the case, I am concerned that the decision to grant rate relief to Lingfield traders will not be imminent. I understand that the appeal must be scrupulously investigated but promises of further visits to the village over the coming months do not put pounds in tills and perhaps more importantly, do not prevent businesses from folding. “There is a real and present danger to the viability of Lingfield’s independent shops. I understand that my favourite butcher’s shop closed this week. I implore the VOA to deal with the appeal as expeditiously as possible to spare other businesses from facing oblivion.” |
