East Surrey MP, Peter Ainsworth, has supported the introduction of a Bill to Parliament which would require energy companies to publish information on invoices indicating whether the customer is on the cheapest tariff offered by that company for their usage pattern. Independent consumer group Energywatch estimates that approximately 5.5 million homes are now in fuel poverty, spending more than 10 per cent of their income on maintaining an adequate level of heating. The Bill would provide greater information for consumers, helping them to make more informed choices about the best tariff for their specific needs. Mr Ainsworth commented: “Better information from energy companies will help all households but, most importantly, those that are least well off. I believe that this is the right way to help some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”
