Ainsworth Supports Lingfield Rate Reduction Request Print

East Surrey MP, Peter Ainsworth, has applauded all local efforts to resolve the problems that are being caused by the Lingfield High Street roadworks and, most recently, the rate reduction request made by Tandridge Chief Executive, Stephen Weigel.

In a recent letter to the Valuation Office Agency, Mr Ainsworth supported all the sentiments that were raised by Mr Weigel on behalf of Lingfield traders, who have lost significant revenue due to the unplanned, prolonged works.

Mr Ainsworth said:

“Aside from my letter to the Valuation Office Agency in support of Stephen Weigel’s request, I have sent further letters to Morrison and Southern Gas Networks, asking them to investigate the circumstances that led up to this dire situation occurring and requesting that they get a move on.  My original letter of 26th January to Southern Gas Networks has yet to be acknowledged; they cannot possibly think that by ignoring the situation it will just go away.”

He went on to say:

“The roadworks have caused significant damage to the local economy at what is already a difficult time - economic recession and heavy snow in January have proved burdensome enough.  It’s jolly lucky that Lingfield’s community spirit and ‘roll your sleeves up’ mentality is so strong.  That’s not to say that a reduction in rates would not come as a welcome relief for those whose livelihoods are potentially at stake.  It heartens me that the Valuation Office Agency has agreed to a provisional meeting on 24th February to discuss the possibility further and I have strongly urged them to look favourably upon Mr Weigel’s request.”

23rd February 2010

 Dear Ms Rawsthorne,

I have been copied in on a letter that was recently sent to you by the Chief Executive of Tandridge District Council, Stephen Weigel, in regard to the rate reduction request for all traders who have been affected by the recent roadworks in Lingfield.

I have subsequently had sight of your response, dated 19th February, and welcome your offer of a provisional meeting to be held on 24th February.

Naturally I support all the sentiments raised by Mr Weigel and I would be most grateful if you could look favourably upon his request, particularly given the huge disruption, stress and financial loss that my constituents have faced at what is already a very difficult time.

I look forward to hearing the outcome of the meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Ainsworth MP
