East Surrey MP, Peter Ainsworth, has presented a Sustainable Livestock Bill in Parliament this week, which could be a huge step towards fixing the food chain.

The Sustainable Livestock Bill demands an ambitious new plan to reduce the huge environmental and social impact of the UK’s meat and dairy consumption whilst supporting livestock farming that is fair, green and healthy.  It has the full, ongoing support of Friends of the Earth, who are heavily involved in campaigning to engender greater sustainability in the food chain.

Mr Ainsworth said:

“Intensive meat and dairy farming is not just bad news for the climate, it’s devastating to for the world’s forests. If current trends continue, farming for animal feed and cattle ranching alone will destroy 40 per cent of the Amazon rainforest by 2040.

“Factory farming – and the demand for the cheap, high-protein animal feed on that it depends on – is trashing the planet. This groundbreaking Bill gives us a real chance to get off the intensive meat.”
